While it was quite warm, we seemed to dodge the rain so our activities were never hampered.

The beauty of this island always seems to overwhelm me, there is something inspirational around every corner. Travelers from this trip felt the highlights were: learning how batiks are designed and printed, printing their own wax-resist indigo batiks, the Hoffman factory and field tour, and of course shopping.

Fabric shopping was particularly fun as we were able to pick up incredible Balinese batiks for $1.75 a meter (!), these along with the colorful sarongs will make an incredible quilt, or for some who were with us, perhaps 10 to 20 quilts!! In addition to the batiks, silver beads and jewelry, which are very reasonable here, soon adorned the fingers, wrists, necks and ears of most tour participants.

The colors and scenery of the markets and landscapes are so inspiring, I believe that many of us had quilt ideas in our head by the end of the first day.

Staying at our two beautiful hotels allowed us to see Bali from different perspectives; from the serenity of the beach at Nusa Dua to the tropical rainforest in the art village of Ubud the scenic variety of the island and islanders was evident. In between, the sites, sounds and smells we enjoyed will be memories that remain with us for many years to come.

Please enjoy highlights from our 2010 tour in the slideshow below. Our 2011 tour is already filling and we will soon be adding an optional 3 day extension to Java. For more information see our website.

Personalize a slideshow design

Noteworthy

It is my hope that this blog will be of interest to people who like quilts and love to travel, and that those who have a constructive comment know they will be free to say what they like and it will be posted.

However, today I found an unkind comment about a trip taken with a competitor and a personal (verbal) attack on him. The dreaded April 15, is on the horizon, but not here yet and certainly, it isn't keeping us from setting the stage for wonderful travel opportunities next year. Of course, this gives everyone time to plan for a trip of a lifetime with Deb Roberts and World of Quilts Travel.

On the horizon and in place for bookings in 2011 is another great trip to Bali. If you love batiks or printed fabric history, this is the place for you! Many do not realize that when India was sending out their fabulous chintz fabrics to Europe, they were also exporting to the East, to areas that included Indonesia. Like Europe, these areas wanted to emulate the designs that were coming from India, so they set up their own shops and soon, had a thriving textile economy of their own. The Indonesians, in particular on Java and Bali, have kept the age old printing traditions and the textile economy there today is just as important as it was 200 years ago. It is a place one can visit and actually see the color changes of the fabric going through the dye bath, the preparation of indigo, hand block printing and painting and more. Beyond the fabrics, the scenery and colors of Bali are incredible as are the people who go out of their way to extend their hand of friendship.

Our next trip to this fabulous country is March 29 to April 8, 2011. Like most of my groups, I keep this group small so that everyone can take advantage of the places we will visit - no 45 seat busloads for us! The price is incomparable, so the value for such inspiration could not be better!!
Read more about our Bali itinerary here.

Now, for you cruise fans, so far, we have two incredible cruise opportunities, with a few more in the planning stages.First - to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Electric Quilt Company (can you believe it - 20 years? Now I do feel old.), we are heading out to sea from Miami on a 10 day, 9 night cruise to the Southern Caribbean. Teachers Barb Vlack and Mary Ellen Kranz will be coming along to share some EQ magic with us. Quilt photographer Gregory Case will be on hand to teach us how to not only get great images of our quilts, but to get incredible landscape and family photography as well. Dates are from January 28-February 6, 2011.
For more, see the Caribbean Cruise Website!

In May, 2011, we are going on a much anticipated cruise to the Baltic. Over the years, I have had many requests for a cruise in this area - now I am happy to announce that we have a wonderful itinerary planned on the Emerald Princess, departing from Copenhagen, Denmark on May 24. This 12 day cruise has quite a schedule, going to the most scenic areas of this region including a 2 day stop in St. Petersburg, Russia. It will be an amazing journey, and once again, I have managed to get a very good rate from Princess for this cruise, which of course, I pass right along to you! Read more here.

Additional trips for 2011 are in the works, please check our website often. If you haven't signed up for our mail list - be sure to consider doing this, someone will win a cruise at the end of the year!

I wish to thank you all for your support and emails you send to me about your own travel experiences. I love to read about what quilters are doing around the world, we have such a wonderful bond and connection - even thousands of miles apart.

Easter blessings to all,

Deb

Travel News

It has definitely been a while since I have posted here, and I thank those who have sent emails asking why.

It has just been a very strange time here, we have been looking for a new home out of the area and between travels to different places and my 'other' job as an RN, I have had very little time to devote to the blog.

However, I hope that time will become more available as my husband is seemingly less interested in moving at the moment as I have convinced him to be patient as we look for the right place to call home.

So, my last post was about the Hawaii cruise and the response has exceeded my expectations. I have added as many cabins as I can, and I am close to selling out. This will be an amazing adventure with Melinda Bula, Patt Blair and Marie Strait who have designed projects just for this adventure.

If you have been considering the trip, please do sign up soon, I cannot guarantee availability much longer. One will still be able to sign up after my block of cabins is gone, for as long as Princess has cabins, however the regular Princess rate is $400 more per person than what my cabins are selling for. For more information see http://worldofquiltstravel.com/Hawaii.htm

And who said I did not offer value??

On another note - with the help of the current European economy, the dollar has risen nicely against the Euro, making a summer visit to Europe a great travel bargain. I have a few spots remaining on my European quilting tour this August which will include Italy, Switzerland and France. Should you choose to join us you will also have the option of a 10 or 20 day itinerary depending on your schedule. This is absolutely one of my favorite trips - combining the culture and history of Europe's textile world with contemporary arts and crafts. It promises to be an amazing trip as we visit the most beautiful and scenic areas of these countries. At first, I found this rather mysterious and wondered if it was legitimately the USMC. So, I inquired.

I was surprised that it was indeed the USMC, and after gathering my composure I asked more.

Thinking it was a local effort, I asked, "What are you fundraising for?"

Marine: "For equipment we will need in Afghanistan, Mam".

Me: "Equipment? What kind of equipment? Do you mean things like laptops and IPODs?"

Marine: "No Mam (they are so sweet and polite). For things like rifle supports to help keep them steady when we have to lie prone, Mam".

Dumbfounded, I asked him to repeat what he had just said. When he did, I said that I found this hard to believe. I asked what else.....

"Well Mam, things like gloves to help protect our hands, they have special knuckle protection so that if we need to we can use them as a weapon."

I asked who was in charge. I was assured that this battalion like others, will be given all they "need" upon deployment, but that the fundraising will buy them those things that will allow them do a better job...such as the rifle support, the gloves, special flashlights, knee pads.....and more.

When I asked how much they needed to raise to buy the things they need - the answer was, "About ten dollars a marine, Mam."

!!!!????!!!!

At $10 a head, these young men should not have to raise their own money for needed supplies to increase their chances of being an effective soldier and coming home alive. Before deployment, they should be spending their weekend time with their family, not in a parking lot washing cars for "any donation". There is something terribly wrong when the USMC cannot afford to provide ALL that is necessary to those fighting on our behalf.

I am sorry, I know this blog is not about politics, and is really sincerely meant for things of a peaceful nature....but, some things just have to be said.

Quilter's - do I sense some support here? We can start by writing to our members of congress.

Fall into Color

With school back in session and many sewing machines now being dusted off, many of us are looking for some new inspirations. When I was with Jen in 2007, she was already working on her plans, and stated that this was going to be a dream come true for her as she has a passion for sharing not only the culture of the Welsh quilters, but the spirit of the quilts, the meaning of the motifs - all the details that make Welsh quilts special.

The Gallery is in the old town hall in Lampeter, Wales which has taken some time to restore in addition to creating the lovely gallery spaces.

For more information see: http://www.jen-jones.com/JJWQC.htm

The Gallery and Jen's antique quilt shop are both amazing historical buildings, that have been lovingly created into beautiful places to see quilts. Greg is planning some incredible things; you will even learn some of his secrets for getting those great shots of quilts that you have seen in over 80 books and publications. Greg is on the "hot" list of quilt photographers and his list of clients is the who's who list of quiltmaking.

However, he is the nicest person one would ever want to meet and he is really looking forward to being with quilters on a cruise and teaching us how to improve our photography skills, not just with quilts, but with everything. What better place to practice than the Mediterranean, with ports of call like Rome, Athens, Ephesus, Sicily and Crete. The scenery will be incredible and the inspiration for future quilts will be limitless! This is a small group tour with a restricted number of spaces, once they are gone, they are gone, do register early to avoid disappointment. Http://worldofquiltstravel.com/Medcruise.htm

But wait! While you are already in Rome, consider joining the Grand European Adventure tour - as we traverse the countryside's of Italy, Switzerland and France? I cannot believe that July 15, just whizzed by, only how many weeks left to enjoy the great weather, family picnics and friends? Summer has always been my most favorite time of year. I loved it when my kids were home, there was always so much activity.

On July 1, I sent out an email announcement regarding upcoming tours, and by the response I can see there is a lot of interest in quilt related travel next year.

We still have a few openings in some of our remaining 2009 trips including our cruise on the Mexican Riviera with Mary Mashuta and Nancy Brenan Daniel coming up November 7-12. With a price starting at $749, who doesn't want to spend some time on the Riviera? AND, if you register by August 5, you could be the lucky person who gets their cruise absolutely free.

Also coming up is our annual Houston event, the Yokohama Quilt Festival in Japan, and the Christmas Market Tour.

In 2010, some very exciting trips are now open for registration. Announced July 1 and already more than half-full is the trip to England and Wales, which includes stopping at the historic quilt exhibition at the V&A museum. This is the first comprehensive quilt exhibit that the museum has had, and, having been in their archives, I can honestly say they have many of the world's antique quilt masterpieces. Do hurry if you have interest in this one, registrations are coming in fast.

As you may have read on the Blog, the Bali tour was a hit and we will go again next year, if you are considering this trip, do register soon as it is filling quickly.

An exciting Mediterranean cruise is planned for August - with noted quilt photographer Gregory Case. He will be giving workshops and providing demonstrations that will not only enable you to take great pictures of your quilts, but he will also be providing tips and techniques that will help you capture unforgettable digital memories of our trip. Space is limited on this one, so do register early.

If you have a lot of time on your hands, consider extending your vacation after the cruise and join me on my Grand European Adventure. On this trip you will have the option to visit historic sites and textile treasures of Italy and Switzerland, and extend your stay even longer with 10 more days in France. You may also opt for Italy and Switzerland alone or France alone. These are my favorite areas for scenery, inspiration and learning more about quilts and quiltmaking.

As you can see lots of things are happening in 2010 - please consider joining me on any tour, I would love to have you.

If you haven't already, do sign up on my email list at http://worldofquiltstravel.com/. This is correct. Pam had originally agreed to come with us but then found she was unable to make the trip because, as she said, she had forgotten that she will not be coming to Houston this year so will not be in the US as she originally had believed.

As magazine advertising had already gone to the presses, it was too late to pull those ads when Pam told me she could not go, however, her name was removed from the website. The only thing I can suggest that could cause a website to appear to have a discrepancy is that sometimes, one forgets that their browser retains cookies to previously opened pages and when one tries to access the page again, one will see the same exact page as before, because it was "saved" by the cookie. Some browsers are automatically set to refresh after a certain length of time, others have to be manually refreshed.

I apologize to the person who wrote for causing any concern or confusion, it was certainly nothing intentionally left for someone to misinterpret - those browser's can sometimes be tricky. Because your comment seemed that you were so concerned, please let me know who you are so I can give you a free berth on this trip. You may identify yourself by repeating for me what you said in the comment.

Pam WILL be joining me this August on the Quilt Cruise for a Cause - and we are looking forward to a fabulous time. Suddenly, our trip was not about buying batiks, but learning about the traditions and cultures that that have existed for centuries and are embedded in the textile heritage of this island.

An amazing people, the Balinese are extremely gracious and have gone out of their way to make our stay more than memorable. We began our visit in Ubud at the 5 star Komaneka Bisma Hotel, where we were treated like royalty. With this as our home base, we explored this cultural and art rich area of Bali for five days. Visiting batik dyers and textile weavers we were fully enriched in the arts of textile creation. Each of us tried our hand at dyeing our own batik using the was resist method – and all will go home with an incredible indigo and white fabric of their own creation.

Knowing the techniques of dyeing and seeing the process of printing, mordanting and dyeing – the amazing instant transformation of color in the dye-bath was truly an eye-opening experience that at least for me, and reinforced all that I have read over the years. Here, the authentic “BATIK” is done by hand – and is a timely process; taking at least one month to complete a hand waxed and dyed sarong. Each piece is dipped into 5 separate dye baths, 25 times to get the rich and intense colors.

Not to be left out of the textile culture are the Ikat weavings – which to the Balinese are very much like the traditional Hawaiian quilts on those Islands. Designs are used only by family members and to use another’s design will bring on things “bad for the soul”.
The group is having the shopping experience of a life-time, I do believe that we have brought the country out of a recession. The batiks which are original to Java and Bali – are not the same as the BALI style prints we see at home in the States. One can buy a patchwork batik sling shoulder bag for $2.50. A mass produced batik sarong for $3.00, which is about $1.33 a yard! There are more expensive (and labor intensive pieces) that sell for an average of $3.00 a yard. It is very easy to find Batiks in shops and in open markets.

We have connected with several individuals here who are helping organize free trade arrangements for the native dyers and weavers, while at the same time helping the dyers learn about natural dyes and processes – as opposed to the chemical dyes they have been using for the last generation. The hope is to empower them while improving the ecology of the area. It was incredible to learn that Bali royalty has taken the lead in this process as he facilitates work for many Balinese women to work in their home where they can care for their families.

The landscape is breathtaking – from the beautiful rich turquoise of the sea to the deep bright green of the tropical jungles. Along the landscape one frequently sees tributes to the Hindu gods, small personal temples in front of businesses and homes, as well as large neighborhood temple areas. Tiered rice paddies fill the open areas and are found in many private yards, as rice is the main staple.

Our guide is perfect, well versed in the religious and cultural aspects that we find unique to us. The Bali people are very respectful of others – no matter who one is. They believe that the most important thing is to ‘respect people (after god). Family is extremely important, and they stay together in all business and social aspects. Their people are happy with little, having a worth ethic of “no work, no money”. Imagine that. The most interesting job that I have heard about are the Salt Makers, women who dry the ocean water, sift the sand from the salt and collect the salt for food use of the community.

Departing the Komaneka Bisma Hotel, we head for Nusa Dua, the most well known beach in Bali – for the last five days of our journey. After our check in at the luxury Nusa Dua Beach Resort Hotel, we made our way to the sand and shores for some down time. From here we set out to visit additional sites rich in Bali culture. An incredible journey to the cool mountains took us to the Ulun Danu Temple, found on a smile island in a lake, lunch was a feast overlooking terraced rice fields in the valley below. Following our stop here we spent the evening at the Tanah Lot Temple area and enjoyed a cultural dance show by the sea. A fun stop was the Monkey Forest, as many babies had recently been born it was the highlight of our visit to watch them cling close to "mama".

The absolute highlight of our tour was spending time with the workers at the facilities of Hoffman of California's batik factory. Mr. Hoffman is known throughout the Island as "a very good man", and one realizes why when they discover how happy his employees are and learns of the company's philanthropy to the Bali people. The Hoffman's have retained employees for over 20 years in addition to serving as a blessing to many of Bali's families. Additionally, with insight as to what the chemical dyes might be doing to the area's environment, the Hoffman's have had the foresight to build what they told us is the only Bali batik industry water-purification system. The almost black water which was used in the dyeing process goes into the tanks, through the system and returns to the river clean and clear. CONGRATULATIONS to the Hoffman's! As a side note - one of the Hoffman's mentioned to me at Quilt Market that the impetus for the system was the notable disappearing of tropical fish off of Bali's shore within a few years after the Batik export industry exploded in the 1980's. If they haven't already, I truly hope that other island batiker's will follow suit.

Overall - an incredible experience, one that will be remembered for many years to come. If you havn't opened the smilebox link already, Please feel free to take a few minutes with some pictures from our adventure!

By the way, yes, we are going again next year!

Win..Win...Win

It is time for some fun news!!

I am having a contest - and anyone who is not already on my email update list will want to sign up! It was first suggested late in 2007, that I put this tour together, much like my tour to Bali was suggested by a friend who spends much of his time there. Sometimes it is easier than others to create itineraries that are unique - but with people there who are "in the know", the journey's are nothing but incredible!

For example, one can google, Yangtzee River Cruise, and come up with 100s of offers from companies all offering the same thing. I really strive to be different, I may go to similar places as other tour providers, but I hope that I can show my groups things that no one else has thought of.

There is so much to see in the world - and it is awesome that almost everywhere there are textiles and in many places one will find quilts and/or quilt makers. Recently, I have had a suggestion for a tour from Bonnie Browning at the American Quilters Society. Bonnie has traveled extensively and is really a great gal to be around. We have known each other since 1996 when I became a certified appraiser, and I am thrilled she would like to do a tour with me. Bonnie was way a head of me on this one - and already has contacts made for incredible quilt stops.

Be looking for some great itineraries next year. They will be coming out as availble, airlines will not release group air rates until 11 months from the departure date, so some tours will not be available right away - but check the site often to know what is in the works!!

Travel in Mexico

I recently had the opportunity to talk to someone who had just returned from a Mexican Riviera cruise on the same ship as the one my group is booked on in November of this year. I was eager to hear about her experience because of recent news about violence associated with the drug cartels. She told me that there they felt very safe and secure at every port, stating, "the ports stops are very secure, they want the tourists there and made it clear to us that we were protected....if there are any reasons to be concerned, they are not in the cities where the cruise ships dock."

I would never think to offer a tour if I thought there would be any reason for concern, but like you I understand the need for caution and would not want you to join my Mexican Riviera cruise if you feel the least bit concerned.

The US goverment issued a security warning to Americans in February of 2009 which stated that we should off country roads at night, and not to wear flashy jewelry or carry big bags in central Mexico locations, this is true for a lot of the world.

It is important to note, according to news agencies, the drug cartel problems are in central Mexico, not in the Mexican Caribbean or Riviera areas. Mexican authorities pay close attention to security in tourist areas, as my friend said, they want the tourists there - it is vital to their economy.

A recent news article states: "There were over 5,589,000 cruise ship visitors to Mexico from February 2008 to February 2009....There have been no cruise ship related incidents in Mexico related to drug cartels...no cruise ship passenger has fallen victim to cartel kidnappings or killings or muggings."

I am certainly not one to want to spread fear, but this is an informed decision you must make for yourself - however, considering the way of the world, who knows what next year might bring? As a concession to you, if you want to join my Mexican Riviera cruise this year but have concern over your safety - then let me know, I will give you a $250 credit toward any cruise or tour next year.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and encourage individuals and communities to support children and families.

I just heard about this today, and regret that I did not know about it before now. That's what I said, and I am sticking to it. There is no reason that one should have to pay (or charge) some of the rates for today's quilt related travel. If I can put an Alaska quilt cruise together for less than $1000, so can (and should) everyone. I do not get a better deal than anyone else from the cruise lines.

I love to have teachers accompany my trips, but one thing I do not do is pay a well known teacher an exorbitant amount of money to sit on a motor coach with you - or be available to chat on the deck of a cruise ship. Not that these teachers are not worth it, but you can bet that the cost is factored into the overall tour price - I have been told that there are teachers making $500-$1000 a person just to go on a trip. Let's see....25 people times $1000? WOW! Maybe I am in the wrong business and should be a famous teacher! Wouldn't you rather spend that money on some awesome souvenirs??

So absolutely, I will beat any offer for the same or similar tour/cruise, you may not get to sit with a famous quilter for 10 days, but you will still have the time of your life!!

FREEDOM TO FLY

On one recent trip there were some who did not register until it was past the airline cut off date for the group seats. This was an immediate concern to me due to change of prices and a supposed "group" rate. When these gals were booked on the same flight as the group, I found that they were actually paying less for their flight than those who were part of the group. I was astounded! As I never add on a fee for airfare or mark it up into the overall rate, I thought, why make everyone meet at some strange departure point when they can all leave from the airport of their choice, save money and still get to the final destination?

Therefore, on tours where group flight arrival is not essential I have announced my "Freedom to Fly" plan. This allows someone traveling with me to choose their own departure airport, time of departure, airline (even use miles) and rate...anything that suits them. It seems like such a good idea over having everyone travel to a single departure point to leave on the tour; especially when we are all going in the same direction anyway. The important things is that we END UP in the same place.

For these tours or cruises - it will be announced in the itinerary - Freedom to Fly Plan. I am happy to help you with flight arrangements or you are free to do this on your own. This was not the first trip where I found those who booked individually received better airfares than the group deals, so why not pass these savings on?

Payment Plans

For those interested who may not have known, I have ALWAYS offered payment plans with my tours...you are invoiced monthly and pay what you can until the final payment is made. Please mention it to your friends and quilting buddies - batiks are known to be around $1 a yard! Can you believe it? And Marty Hoffman is opening his factory doors to us for a peek into the world of Hoffman Batiks. Go to http://worldofquiltstravel.com/Bali.htm

My price to Bali is about $600 less than any similar tour -- yet my trip offers more. Read up about it on my website - http://worldofquiltstravel.com

Do not forget that the winner of the Mexico or Bahamas or Caribbean cruise will be selected from among my travelers this year!! In April, 2008 I announced Quiltsmiles, the quilt travel industry's first "frequent traveler" program to reward loyal travelers. Similar to airline and hotel programs, travelers earn credits based on the length and cost of their trip which can accrue or be used to offset the price of any future tour. Members of this program also receive special amenities and gifts during their trips, and invitations to one of a kind travel experiences prior to general announcements.

On December 15, I announced additional features and incentives that will allow one to earn credits for future travel. The Friends and Family plan will allow one to earn cash credit toward a future tour when they or a friend/family member book any type of travel through me. This can be an individual trip, a cruise, a student hostel trip, golf trip, art lovers journey, European River Cruise - anything one's heart desires, I will plan the perfect journey for you - and I will guarantee the best possible price. In booking through me, you will earn 1/2 of the commission I earn as a credit that will be applied to your Quiltsmiles account for use on a future group tour. It cannot get better.

Please check my website for more information - and learn how to travel with me for free.

Votes of Confidence!

I wish to thank those who participated on the online poll for Best Quilt Cruise and Tour provider - I am honored that you believe my services to you have exceeded all others and I promise to do my best to continue to provide unprecidented travel experiences at prices that cannot be beat.

Bali Tour Almost Full

I have 2 places left on the tour to Bali - a terrific itinerary at an even better price; only $2998 including round trip air from LAX. The cruise will set sail on August 24, 2009 setting a course from London around British Isles. Our ship will be Princess Cruises' Crown Princess. This area and date were selected in order to provide a once-in-a-lifetime quilt travel event as participants may choose to also attend Europe's premiere quilt show, The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. All American Craft, publisher's of The Quilter and Fabric Trends Magazines have offered to sponsor this cruise as part of their 25th anniversary celebration of The Quilter.

The idea for a fundraising cruise of this nature first occurred to me early in the year as financial times began to impact non-profit organizations held dear in the quilt world. Initially my thought was that information and press releases about such a cruise or tour would provide a an additional source of information about the various institutions themselves and monies realized might help achieve a balanced fiscal budget.

Recently however, I have been considering the state of the world and the catastrophic events over the last eight years - since the Presidential Election of 2000. Beyond Wall Street, there is little wonder that the world is on the brink of economic chaos. In the US alone we have had 9/11, an eight year drought in the mid-west, hurricane and tornado damage beyond compare and multiple California wild-fires to mention just a few; world-wide the list is so long that it shudders me to consider it.

I am well aware of our severe economic situation, but I know that people who can will still travel and take vacations. Believe it or not, international vacation travel was up by record amounts in the first half of 2008 when the dollar was at its worst level against world economies. What better way to go than to go somewhere knowing that proceeds from your choice will go to organizations that benefit the arts and to help those in need.

For this reason, my goal through these cruises will be to support Quilt History, Art and Scholarship as well as US/World Disaster Relief through the American Red Cross and Samaritan's Purse.

Information is coming on this special quilt cruise event, please refer to the website at http://quiltcruiseforcause.com/ (available after October 1) or my web site at http://worldofquiltstravel.com.

I would love your comments!!

News from Italy

I cannot say enough by the services offered to my group by Princess Cruise Lines to my group on the Mediterranean Textile Study tour which began on August 28.
Because of the optional quilt related port tours I offered, one of the partners of Quilt Camp in the Desert asked if her group on the same ship might join mine; we shared 15 days of quilting memories which began in Barcelona where at the design and textile museum in Terassa we saw Spanish Toile (monochrome copperplate prints). There was a very nice selection of prints from the mid-17oo's when Spain tried to capitalize on the French cotton printing ban by importing French printers to expand their own printing industry. Many prints lacked the fine detail of designs printed in England or France, but there were also some with exceptional engravings. The marked difference was that these were all identified (in Spanish) somewhere on the design itself.

The next day we docked in Marseille, where we were enthusiastically greeted at the Museum of the Chateau Gombert, home to over 1000 quilted jupon (petticoats) and many broderie de Marseille (boutis) and pique. It was a treat to see the 'boutis' pieces of yesterday to compare with our project of the cruise - a boutis bag project taught by French teacher Marie-Christine Flocard. We ended the day with a surprise (to the participants) visit to a Marseille quilt shop, and needless to say the shopkeeper was thrilled by our time in his shop, offering wine and refreshment while the group enthusiastically counted out yards of Provencial fabrics.
During cruise time we enjoyed excellent cuisine of anything anyone could want: from custom grilled hamburgers, lobster, prime rib, salmon....there was no lack of food during our 12 day adventure. Not a night owl myself, the highlight for me on the cruise was Princess' own "Movies Under the Stars". Each evening on the top deck they showed a 1st run movie; cruisers could lounge on padded deck chairs with a blanket while stewards offered popcorn, chocolate ship cookies (WARM ONES) and milk.

Our 3rd port was at the port for Florence, Italy. From here we coached over to Prato for a visit to their textile museum. This is a very well designed museum detailing the production of all textile forms, but specializing in wool. From here it was to Florence and some window shopping, stops at a fabric store for some, and gelatto for others...myself included.

Stops off the textile path included Rome, Naples and Mykonos before we stopped in Istanbul for some custom touring to see what we thought would be textile markets and a textile museum. However, our guide convinced me there were no 'textile only markets' and "certainly not" a museum (I have yet to decide whether to believe him). We did enjoy the day at the Spice and Grand Bazaars, and many a penny were left in Istanbul. Linda Pumphrey found the deal of the day at a stall that had wood blocks used to print fabric - she says there were "1000's" of them. Sad more of us did not find it, but she lucked out with some lovely pieces. Others found beautiful cotton caftans, jewelry and ceramics from the local area - I do not think anyone truly left unhappy.

After a day in Athens, our last stop was Venice. It was difficult to imagine this city as awe inspiring, however as the ship sailed into the Venice port at noon, with Italian Opera playing over the speakers all 3100 passengers aboard the Emerald Princess were glued to the railings....and all silent. It was a breathtaking experience as we passed St. Marks square and the Grand Canal. I spent that afternoon on Burano Island where there are women who still hand make lace and sell it locally. The workmanship is beautiful - and as a dying art, I was thrilled to see the details of the way it is made. Additionally, the colors of the island were incredible. I never thought a red or orange house would be attractive, but next to bright yellow, green and ochre, they fit right in and only added to the charm of the Island neighborhoods. There is something to be said for those who appreciate color.

Ending our cruise - we have now made our way to Lake Como, IT, which is near the Swiss border. This is our final destination of the tour. Yesterday we visited the Silk Museum, which is very well planned and includes machinery and details of silk production from worm through spinning, weaving and printing. Many on the tour said they enjoyed this museum the most.

Now as I sit on the patio of our lakeside hotel, it hardly seems that we have covered so much territory in the last 13 days, but many memories have been made and friendships formed.

Tomorrow the group leaves for home - while I go to Mulhouse to visit my friend Jacqueline and volunteer at the Museum of Printed Textiles for one week as I wait for the Carefour European Patchwork Expo to open at St. Marie de Mines. There is always something in the world of quilts waiting to be seen.

Deadline approaching for Christmas Market tour

Absolute registration deadline for this tour is October 1, 2008. My daughter was married 2 weeks ago and is back in DC thriving, and I am finalizing details on the 1st Mediterranean Cruise tour departing on August 26. I have 30 + people coming along and I hope all come home with a new appreciation for European quilt and textile history and culture. Some have asked if I will be taking the same trip next year - if there is enough interest, then definitely!!

The best way to assure any tour is go grab your own group of friends and let me know where you want to go!

Some tour news -

Just in from Mulhouse and the Museum of Printed Textiles: The exhibit in December that is scheduled on my Christmas Market tour is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone who loves old fabric. They are bringing out the most incredible pieces of Indian painted and block printed textiles for this showing which will also include pieces from the French East India Company. Now, how often does one imagine pieces from that collection come out of hiding?? In my humble opinion, this will be the best tour I have ever taken just from the scope fo the quilts and fabrics seen here and also for the Antique Quilt exhibit at the Fries Museum in the Netherlands. I cannot wait. The deadine is approaching (August 20) please sign up - I know you will return home so thankful that you came along. See the site: http://worldofquiltstravel.com/Christmas.htm

News from the V&A: Finally, dates have been announced for the quilt symposium coinciding with their 2010 quilt exhibit (to end all exhibits?) I am working on itinerary details for both the symposium and a UK quilt tour, please check back at the website for updates.

Details are now online (http://worldofquiltstravel.com/AmericanAdventure.htm) for my very 1st all American tour. I am very excited that in September after the Mediterranean quilt cruise I will be spending time as a volunteer in my favorite museum of all time, the Museum of Printed Textiles (Musee d'Impression sur Etoffes) in Mulhouse, France. I have wanted to do this since the first time I stepped into their sample book room of over 3,000,000 fabric samples. None of this would have happened if not for having taken tours to the museum and established a great relationship with the curator and textile keeper there. This all comes just at the perfect time as Jacqueline Jacque, the curator will retire after the first of the year (2009) and I will miss her terribly. Now I have this opportunity to spend quality time in the museum and with the great keepers of the cloth!!

By the way - December 2008, Christmas Market tour will be going to Mulhouse....!!

Deb

First Blog

Here I am, blogging. My friends and colleagues thought it couldn't be done, but all things aside, here it is, my first blog about cruises and tours specifically for quilters and quilt enthusiasts (including those incredible spouses I see at shows who carry the shopping bags!!) Bless you all!!

So, how did I get here you ask? As a quilt maker, fabric admirer, designer, collector I have had a passion about quilts and related textiles for about as long as I can remember....since watching my grandmother and Auntie quilt when I was a child. This passion has ensnarled my obsession for travel and voila! Quilt and fabric passion + love of travel =quilt tours. My first tour was to France - and had the wonderful 38 who traveled with me asking for more. I learned a lot from that first trip - one, that it is so nice to see something incredible with people who love it just as much as you do, whether it be a costume, a quilt, a piece of fabric....the collective sighs make it all worthwhile. The other, as nice as everyone is, 38 is just too big of a group for such a tour so now I keep my groups small and leave plenty of room on the coach!

I hope to be able to soon figure out just how all of these blog features work and upload some images from some of my tours....such fun!

Until Next Time!
Deb
